WINDOWS OF THE SOUL
LINDSEY WHITELAW
Lindsey initially called on volunteers to describe how they saw the world with their varying degrees of visual impairment. Due to the pandemic, she mostly communicated over the phone and email to show recipients the art and receive their response back (how they see the piece). It has demonstrated in some instances that sight impairment can enhance rather than hamper the artistic experience; with some unexpected results including a set of keys becoming a tarantula and a Cypriot room becoming a clown’s face.
The collection also includes braille art, traditional paintings, print work and drawings by visually impaired artists.
Windows of the Soul is an art exhibition seeking to convey the visual experiences of those living with sight impairment. The works are online and are exhibited periodically in galleries.
The project was started by two ophthalmologists, Caroline Kilduff and Siegfried Wagner, who sought to create an exhibition of artwork to raise awareness of the realities of sight loss. Lindsey became involved due to her fascination with the project, and the feeling that she could create different versions of one painting as responses to how visually impaired people saw her work.
